Chapter 4: The Vastness of the Way

 

The Way is an empty vessel, and yet it never overflows with use.

A vast abyss!  It seems to be the ancestor of all things.

It blunts sharp edges, untangles knots, softens glare, and it joins with the dust.

Submerged!  It seems to exist.  

I don’t know whose child it is, it seems to be the ancestor of the gods. 

 

The Way is like an empty vessel that we can keep pouring our lives into.  No matter how much we utilize it, it never overflows.  It has infinite capacity and potential for everyone, and as such is the Way to help us tap into our own infinite ability and potential.  There is never too much for it to handle, never something it cannot take on.  It applies to everything, everywhere, and is always available whenever we reach a crossroads in our lives and are ready to make a different choice.  

Like a vast abyss, it is all encompassing!  Nothing falls outside of its purview.  The Way is a vast, infinite network of solutions, options, and opportunities.  The ancestor of all things, it predates us all.  Because of this, it has the ability and capacity to blunt, polish, or refine all the sharp edges, prickly, protruding points, and barbs of this world and our lives.  Once we find the Way, we can untangle all the knots, snags, and snares we create and encounter on our journeys through life.  It can soften the bright glares of glory, glamour, and guile in this world that can blind us to who we really are and what we are really capable of, and it can relate to all our mortal sentiments and experience in the “dust.”  The Way provides balance, perspective, harmony, and moderation.  Just below the surface, it is the substrate of the universe, and even though we can’t always see it clearly, it sure seems to be there.  As such, it is foundation, a grounding force for our lives.  We may not know where it came from, why it exists, or if it was “created” but it seems to have always been there, even predating our own notions of the divine.

So, there is always a Way, a Way forward, a Way upward, a Way around, a Way through, or a Way out.  There is nothing in our lives that cannot change if we want it to – no challenges or problems that we cannot solve or overcome.  We don’t have to remain stuck or settle for “that’s just who I am” or “that’s just the way it is" or "this is my lot in life" -- no the promise of the Way is that there is always hope.  No matter where we are right now, no matter where we find ourselves in this moment, no matter how we got there or whose fault it was, no matter what obstacles and challenges loom in front of us or seem to block the way forward in our lives, there is ALWAYS a Way.  We are enough and the tools and support we need are out there waiting for us to pick up, tap into, and create the lives we've always dreamed of.  Believe it.  Hope for it.  Embrace it.  Don't give up.  Take a step toward it and then we're on our Way.  ~ DCB

Chapter 19: On Simplicity and Unlimited Potential

  Cut off prevailing wisdom, discard discrimination,  and the people will benefit a hundredfold. Cut off craftiness, discard profiteering,  and thieves and bandits will cease to exist. Cut off hypocrisy, discard deception,  and the people will return to filial piety and parental care. These three sayings are insufficient in their message,  perhaps to these should be added: Look to the simplicity of undyed cloth,  embrace the potential of an uncarved block, reduce selfishness, and cut out insatiable appetites. When we institutionalize and popularize wisdom and outsmarting knowledge – what has worked for some people (usually celebrities) in certain circumstances in the past – we run the risk of quashing individual intuition and innovation.   One example: How many people have bounced from fad diet to fad diet or one workout routine to the next feeling without getting the results they want?   How many then give up feeling like a failure ...

Chapter 11: The Value & Utility of Emptiness

  Thirty spokes share a single hub, but it is the hole in the center that makes it useful in a vehicle. Mixing water with clay makes a vessel, but it is emptiness that makes it useful as a vessel. Boring windows and doors makes a room, but it is the open space that makes it useful as a room. Therefore, the presence of something makes it valuable, but the absence in something makes it useful. Similar to the valley and the bellows analogy , this chapter teaches us that value and usefulness aren’t always the same thing and often come from different sources.   A tire is comprised of many spokes but it is the hole in the center that allows it to spin around an axle – it is the opening that gives it function and utility – that makes it useful in a vehicle.   The same principle applies to a bowl.   Even though it is made from clay, it is the hollow in the middle that gives it its usefulness as a vessel – an empty vessel .  The greater the space in the middle, t...
